Young Binary Stars and Associated Disks

The typical product of the star formation process is a multiple star system, most commonly a binary star. Binaries have provided the first dynamical measures of the masses of pre-main-sequence (PMS) stars. These measurements have established that T Tauri-like stars are indeed of solar mass or less, and have provided preliminary support for the mass calibrations of theoretical PMS evolutionary t...

A Connection Between Submillimeter Continuum Flux and Separation in Young Binaries

We have made sensitive 800-m continuum observations of low-mass, pre-main sequence (PMS) binary stars with projected separations less than 25 AU in Taurus-Auriga to study disks in the young binary environment. We did not detect any of the observed binaries, with typical 3 upper limits of 30 mJy. Combining our observations with previous 1300-m observations of PMS Taurus binaries by Beckwith et a...

The Connection between Submillimeter Continuum Flux and Binary Separation in Young Binaries: Evidence of Interaction between Stars and Disks

We present 800 μm continuum photometry of pre–main-sequence binary stars with projected separations ap < 150 AU in the Scorpius-Ophiuchus star-forming region. Combining our observations with published 1300 μm continuum photometry from André & Montmerle (1994), we find that binaries in Sco-Oph with 1 < ap < 50–100 AU have lower submillimeter continuum fluxes than wider binaries or single stars, ...

Warping of Accretion Disks with Magnetically Driven Outflows: a Possible Origin for Jet Precession

Current theoretical models for the outflows/jets from AGN, X-ray binaries and young stellar objects involve large-scale magnetic fields threading an underlying accretion disk. We suggest that such a disk is subjected to warping instability and retrograde precession driven by magnetic torques associated with the outflow. The growth timescale for the disk warp and the precession period are of ord...

An Observational Diagnostic for Ultraluminous X-ray Sources

We consider observational tests for the nature of Ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs). These must distinguish between thermal–timescale mass transfer on to stellar–mass black holes leading to anisotropic X-ray emission, and accretion on to intermediate–mass black holes. We suggest that long–term transient behavior via the thermal–viscous disk instability could discriminate between these two poss...

Pre - main sequence binaries with aligned disks ?

We present the results of a study performed with the goal to investigate whether low-mass pre-main sequence binary stars are formed by multiple fragmentation or via stellar capture. If binaries form preferentially by fragmentation, we expect their disks to be co-planar. On the other hand, the capture scenario will lead to a random distribution of disk orientations. We performed near-infrared po...
